It is the most common question in skincare, and it should have the simplest answer: serum goes before moisturizer. But the honest answer has one wrinkle — and the wrinkle is why so many people layer an oil-based serum like ours and feel like it "isn't working."
Here is the whole logic, the one exception worth knowing, and the exact order we recommend.

The rule: thin to thick
Skincare layers in order of texture — lightest and thinnest first, heaviest and thickest last. Each layer sets down on the one before it; a thick cream creates a sealed surface that thinner products cannot get through.
That is why the order matters. Put moisturizer on first and then try to press a serum over it, and the serum mostly rides on top of the cream instead of meeting your skin. You used a good product and got the leftovers. Reverse it — serum on clean skin, moisturizer over the top — and each product does its own job: the serum delivers its ingredients directly, and the cream seals the surface.
The wrinkle: our serum is oil-based
Most serums are water-based and disappear into skin in seconds. The Lumia Bakuchiol Face Serum is oil-based — jojoba seed oil and squalane are the top of its ingredient list, with bakuchiol carried in that base. (New to bakuchiol? Our bakuchiol explainer covers what it is and why people choose it.)
Oil changes the feel, not the rule — with one adjustment:
- After cleansing, on slightly damp skin is the sweet spot. An oil film spreads beautifully over skin that is not bone dry, and it helps hold that dampness in.
- Then moisturizer, if you use one. Yes, a cream can go over an oil serum. Give the serum about a minute to settle, then apply cream over it. Many of our customers find the serum alone leaves their skin soft enough at night and skip the cream entirely — that is a legitimate finish, not a shortcut.
- In the morning, sunscreen is always last. Whatever else you layer, sun protection closes the routine.
The exact order (the Duo routine)
This is the two-step routine our Face Essentials Duo is built on, with the optional extras slotted in:
- Cleanse — Wild Papaya Foam Face Wash. One pump of foam, gentle massage, rinse. (Order starts here: nothing layers well over an unwashed face.)
- Serum — 2–3 drops of Bakuchiol Face Serum, warmed in your palms and pressed in. (Unsure how many drops is right? We counted them.)
- Moisturizer — optional, about a minute later, if your skin wants the extra layer.
- Morning only: sunscreen — always the final step.
Two products doing the core work, in the only order that lets both of them do it. The Duo is $42 against $45 bought separately — the bundle exists because the pair is the routine.
Mistakes that undo good products
- Serum over moisturizer — the classic. The cream seals first, the serum never arrives.
- No wait between layers — stacking wet-on-wet turns two products into one mixed layer. Sixty seconds between serum and cream is enough.
- Serum on a dirty face — cleansing is not optional prep; it is step one. Serum pressed over sunscreen residue and the day's film is serum wasted.
- Mixing serum into the cream jar — some people premix in the palm to save time. You lose the layering benefit and the dose control. Twenty seconds of pressing is the whole investment.
FAQ
Can I use the serum without any moisturizer at all?
Yes. Because the Lumia serum is oil-based — jojoba and squalane — it leaves a soft, nourished feel on its own. Plenty of people use it as their only evening step after cleansing. If your skin still feels dry after it settles, add the cream over it.
What about toner or essence — where do they fit?
Water-based steps go before an oil-based serum: cleanse, then toner or essence if you use them, then serum, then cream. Thin to thick still runs the whole show.
Does the order change between morning and night?
The core order does not change: cleanse, serum, moisturizer. The only difference is the last step — sunscreen in the morning, nothing after moisturizer at night.
I have been doing it backwards. Did I ruin anything?
No damage done — just diluted results. Your serum was riding on top of your cream instead of under it. Flip the order tonight and the same two bottles will feel like different products.
Two steps, in order, every day
Cleanse, then nourish — serum before moisturizer, thin before thick. It is the smallest possible piece of skincare knowledge and the one that makes everything else you own work better. The pair built for exactly this order: Face Essentials Duo — $42.
